 Summary

Why have most stock and bond investors lagged the indexes so badly over the past many years? The answer is that they have tried unsuccessfully to time the markets, using a variety of techniques.

Motivating their actions have been a number of behavioral biases, prejudices, and slip-ups -- most of which derive from deep seated, hardwired emotional responses under the control of the most powerful part of the human brain. Behavioral-finance experts have studied these obstructions to productive investing, suggesting to use a range of strategies for sidestepping them.
